The oldest and best known of the awards are theCaldecott Medal, for the most distinguished American picture book, and the Newbery Medal, given to the author for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Today there are over 20 categories, honoring dozens of authors and illustrators for their memorable contributions to children's and young adult literature.
