Red Kayak

Title: Red Kayak
Author: Priscilla Cummings

Review by Madison M.

If you have guessed why the title is called red kayak you probably guessed it is about a boat. You are right but theres much more to the story other than the kayak. The main character's name is Brady and he lives with his family in Maryland. Brady and his friends take a big part of what happens in the story. When the DiAngelos move into the farm they cause many problems for Digger(Brady’s best friend).

Tragedy is a word that takes a big part in Red Kayak. Tragedy is a word that means, An event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress, such as a serious accident, crime, or natural disaster. In the story a little kid named Ben dies and the Tragedy falls on his family and friends. They all try to get over the Tragedy but it takes a lot to do so.

Brady might be the main character but, the rest of the characters take a big part of the story too. Bradys parents support Brady in whatever he does. The DiAngelos are the ones who moved into Digger’s grandpa’s farm and they have a son named Ben. J.T. and Digger are Brady’s best friends and they cause problems in the story.

Digger and J.T. have always been Brady’s best friends. But after the DiAngelos move into the farm Digger is really mad at that family. Digger and J.T. have a way to get back at them and they go for it. Brady finds out and he doesn’t know it J.T. and Digger will be his friends anymore.

What will Brady do? Will brady be friends with J.T. and digger anymore? What will happen to the DiAngelos? Will J.T. and Digger’s plan Work?

Priscilla Cummings, the author for Red Kayak grew up the middle of three children on a dairy farm in western Massachusetts. When she first started to write she wrote about farm animals. She looked up to her dad and had always thought she would follow in his footsteps and become a teacher, too, but in college she changed her mind because she enjoyed writing so much. After graduating from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in English literature, she became a newspaper reporter. Since her first first novel she has wrote six other novels.

At first Red Kayak did not sound interesting. But when I started to read it I enjoyed it. The climax was my favorite part. This book makes you realize that you don’t live forever, and you need to be the best you can when you are here on Earth.
