Turn to Stone features Freeman's famous Duluth detective Jonathan Stride. Passing through Shawano, Stride decides to stop and visit his mother's grave only to become a witness to a local police officer's suicide. Stride, somewhat reluctantly, slides into detective mode after the widow asks for Stride's assistance in finding out "why." As with previous Freeman novels, colorful, complex characters emerge along with deceivingly simple-turned-twisted circumstances. This fast-paced thriller is not to be missed and as an enovella is a quick read. Last summer, Freeman visited the Shawano area to do some research and Shawano-ites will find some of their favorite places and well-known landmarks popping up in the story- Kuckuk Park, Wolf River Drive, Smalley Street, the Comfort Inn, Mielke Arts Center and, of course, Tom's Tap.
