Mossy

bookcover
Title: Mossy
Author: Jan Brett

This is a cute story about Mossy- a turtle who grows plants on his shell.  The artwork is STUNNING as all Jan Brett's are, but this is a favorite.  We have checked it out twice in the last month just to look at the pictures again.  There is so much to see.  If you like nature and especially nature museums, like our family, you will enjoy this book!  It is my favorite Jan Brett book.

How many times have we all missed an opportunity to be kind to someone?  Chloe doesn't really know why she turns away from the new girl, Maya, when Maya tries to befriend her.  And every time Maya asks if she can play with Chloe and the other girls, the answer is always no.  So Maya ends up playing alone. And then one day she's gone.  This is a beautiful story with a powerful message that will stick with you long after you close the cover of the book.

A First Visit to the Beach

Title: Wave
Author: Suzy Lee

This wordless story captures a little girl's endearing first visit to the beach. Although the girl is hesitant about the water at first, some splashing around and picking through shells cause her to grow quite fond of the beach. Drawn with flowing watercolors that portray the swelling waves of the ocean, this is a beautiful story that will captivate children and parents alike. Recommended for children 2 and up as the wordless pages require the reader to unravel the message behind the pictures.

All the animals in the diner order two eggs. The fun is to see the different variety. The same and different.

My First Deer Hunt has few words but is  a great story. Be ready to laugh.  Great photos!

This clever book about a princess and  a pig that accidentally swap places makes references to famous fairy tales throughout the story with the repeat line of "It's the sort of thing that happens all the time in books". Except things that usually happen in those other books doesn't happen here. This would be a great family read for children well versed in popular fairy tales and may motivate the adults doing the reading to introduce their children to them.

This new picture book by Lane Smith is a wonderful tribute to his great grandfather. Clever illustrations and meaningful text will have appeal for kids and adults alike.

Author: Eric Litwin

Here is another winner from Eric Litwin featuring the now famous Pete the Cat ( I love my white shoes). This time Pete goes to school and he's rocking in his school shoes all over the place. Young readers and/or audiences are given clues about where Pete is going next in the tour of his school and once he arrives at his destinations Pete reads, eats, plays, etc. in his  cool school shoes. The illustrations are again original and fun and of course, singing the "chorus" of this book makes it another fun read along. We intend to use this book for our annual Kindergarten visits during National Library Card Sign Up Month. Could there be a young child alive that does not want to go to school after having this book read to them? I doubt it.
