Review of Because of Winn-Dixie
Opal named her dog Winn Dixie after a store . Did you know they live in a mobile home? They live in a mobile home because they just moved to Florida. The preacher told Opal ten things about her mother because she was little when her mother left. They have a church that used to be a store .When they are at church they bring their fold up chairs to sit on. Opal met a friend named Gloria Dump. They had a party at Gloria’s. Opal invited her dad the preacher and she invited Miss Franny Block the librarian. When she met Miss Franny Block she thought Winn Dixie was a bear.
I liked the book because it has a dog in it. Opal is the main character. She got the dog at a funny place. I liked when the preacher told ten things about Opal’s mother. If you like realistic fiction, I think you would like this book. If you like dog books, you should read this book. It gives a lot of details about the friends Opal and her dog.
Pokie Pie
The sixth installment in this popular easy-to-read series features best friends Cork and Fuzz babysitting a little porcupine. But one of them is doing all the work. . . . When Cork needs help, Fuzz is too busy to lend a hand. Then Fuzz gets into some trouble of his own, and it’s Cork—and the baby porcupine—to the rescue. Good early chapter book for beginning readers.
Why Are We Here? What's the Meaning of Life?
Mystery and adventure fans will be intrigued by the story of Jeremy Fink, who prior to his birthday receives a locked box from his deceased father with the inscription: "The Meaning of Life; for Jeremy Fink on his 13th birthday." Problem is, there are four keyholes, and no keys. Jeremy and his best friend Lizzy embark on the quest to find the keys and solve the questions we all face about life. I think this would be a good book discussion selection because of the many open-ended questions. This book is about to be released as a feature film to hit theaters in January 2011. Read other Wendy Mass books, too..... I also enjoyed Every Soul a Star and 11 Birthdays.
Uncle McAllister gives Louis a tadpole for his birthday. Louis names the tadpole Alphonse and feeds him cheeseburgers. Alphonse gets so big and unruly that Louis has to take him to obedience school, and when he outgrows the bathtub, Alphonse needs a new home. There is something funny about this tadpole - shouldn't he be a frog by now? Louis is running out of ideas, but Ms. Seevers the librarian has it all figured out. The 25th Anniversary Edition has beautiful new illustrations!
