No Sleep for the Sheep

bookcover
Author: Karen Beaumont

In a big red barn on the farm, a little sheep fell fast asleep. Then at the door came a loud "quack" and Sheep says "Shhh! Not a peep! Go to sleep!" and soon the duck and the sheep fall fast asleep. Sheep's sleep continues to be interrupted as more animals come to the door, only to be put to bed by Sheep. Children will delight in the repetitive nature of this story and will enjoy making noises for all the farm animals.

Peacock and the hens trade places one day and the hilarity ensues! A good story about knowing what you are good at and appreciating others for what THEY are good at.

Farm

bookcover
Title: Farm
Author: Elisha Cooper

While there are lots of entertaining books about farms, farmers and of course farm animals, this one stands alone as a modern depiction of life on a farm. The text is quiet and lyrical as we follow the family through the seasons and all the changes that take place on the farm. Readers get a sense of hardships that weather can bring as well as each family members importance to the running of the farm. Without being idyllic, as so many books about farm life are, readers get a sense of the pace of farm life that may be very different from their own. This book works best for sharing one on one, as the illustrations are hard for a group to see.

Otis is an old red tractor who loves to work hard and play hard. He loves his farm and especially loves to sit under the apple tree at the end of the day. One night a baby calf comes to live with Otis in the barn. The calf misses her mother terribly but Otis’s soft "putt puff" comforts the young calf and the two are fast friends. Soon after the calf arrives on the farm, there is another arrival....a brand new yellow tractor and Otis is moved to the tall weeds behind the barn. The calf tries to get Otis to play but he just sits there, letting the weeds grow over him. Until one day when the calf needs her friend more than ever, Otis proves he is a very special tractor.

This is a fabulous follow-up to Punk Farm. In Punk Farm, the farm animals sing a punk version of "Old MacDonald" and in this book they sing a punk version of "The Wheels on the Bus." Clever!

Author: David Shannon

In this silly tale, Duck decides to try riding a bike, and rides past all the farm animals. Each animal thinks Duck is being silly until they have the opportunity to try riding bikes, too, and they all love it. The text has many repetitions, so there's potential for audience participation. The illustrations are bright, colorful, and appealing. overall, it has great appeal, and makes for an excellent read aloud.
