Title: Bullyville
Author: Francine Prose

Interesting YA book about what it is like to attend a boarding school, during the day, where bullying is rampant. Tied into the story is a reflection on 9/11 because the protagonist's father died in the Twin Towers. The boy is grappling with the loss of his dad, trying to get along with his mom, and coming of age. There is a very good twist in the book that I did not see coming. This is abook about sorting it all out and being a good person.

Author: Ben Mikaelsen

Cole is a youth with an aggression problem. Instead of going to jail, his support network tries "Circle Justice" with him. As part of this concept, he is relegated to a private island for a year. He finally learns that we are all part of the circle of life and that pain hurts us all; gain helps us all.

Title: Weedflower
Author: Cynthia Kadohata

This book was compelling because, although a novel, it taught me so much about the Japanese internment camps during World War II particularly the one called Poston which was on an Indian reservation. It was fascinating that two oppressed peoples were living so closely together and coping with the political ramifications of US government decisions that were out of their control. We see the story through the eyes of Sumiko who describes beauty in the ordinary but she also relays all of the sad things about being encamped. Excellent telling.

Author: John Flanagan

I loved the fact that this book was written by the author for his son. This is the first in a series of books that has literally taken the world by storm (the author is from Australia) and with good reason. The imaginary world is cleverly written, the characters are well drawn, the plot is strong, and the written language is intricate and rich. Give it a try!
