Steampunk Adventure
Westerfeld's Leviathan series continues in this, book two, Behemoth. Set in Europe during WWI, this action-packed adventure mixes mechanical endeavors with genetically modified creatures and doesn't disappoint. Alek is heir to the throne of the Austrian Empire and Deryn (really Devyn, a girl) is a midshipman on the English airship, Leviathan. Set in Istanbul, in the midst of a revolution, the book incorporates factual events with high-action storytelling. A little romance is thrown in too.

Marcus Jordan is new to town and hopes to play high school football. He meets Charlie at a local park and they run through football drills together. Marcus soon discovers Charlie's secret..... he's an ex-NFL player whose had his bell rung too many times and early Alzheimer's is taking his life and family away from him. Marcus is torn between his own love for the game and his loyalty to protect Charlie. This book has enough action and humor to appeal to most middle/high school boys, yet full of meaty discussion topics for classroom or book clubs, too.
Star Light, Star Bright......
Welcome to the Moon Shadow Campground where thousand of star gazers have gathered with their family and friends to watch the solar eclipse. Meet three teens: Ally, Bree and Jack. All very different, all in a difficult situation. Told in alternating voices, we discover that each character has layers of personality and Wendy Mass does a great job in blending them to each other throughout the book. I learned a lot about astronomy, too. If you liked Jerry Spinelli's Stargirl you'll love Every Soul a Star. Oh, and this book made me want to go camping....
Hunger Games
The first book of the Hunger Games Trilogy. In Panem, the aftermath of the destruction of north America, lives Katniss Everdeen. At the reaping her sister's name is called. She volunteers to go in instead. Before the games even start she is plunged into the Capitol and all it;s strangeness. In the games she teams up and then for one of the first times, both tributes from district 12 win. But because of their actions a revolution may be brewing.
Fiction
Catching Fire is a great novel about a girl and a boy, Katniss and Peeta, that are trying to stay alive. Throughout their endeavors they go on a victory tour all through Panem. In the middle of the story they find out that they are going into the games, again. Before the book ends a district is gone and a revolution is started. It is a great recommendation.
Festival of the World: Canada
Canada is in North America. The book says there are MAPLE Syrup Festivals. When the syrup is poured on the snow it becames sticky and chewy like taffy. You can make a Dreamcatcher.

When 12 year old Percy Jackson discovers that he is a half-blood ( half- god, half-human) the whole world takes a turn. Percy finds out that monsters are after him and the only way he can be safe is by going to Camp Half-Blood on Long Island. He learns how to battle monsters and to use a sword. But things get tough when Percy is blamed for stealing Zeus's master lightning bolt. The reason Percy is blamed is because he is a son of the Big Three, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. Percy is the son of the water god, Poseidon. Noe Percy and his friends, Annabeth and Grover, go on a trip across the country battling monsters and facing danger everywhere. Will Percy find the master bolt before the summer solstice?
The Clique
In this story, 7th grade alpha, Massie Block, is forced to live with LBR ( Loser Beyond Repair), Claire Lyons from Orlando, Florida. Claire shows up at Massie's house wearing worn overalls and smelly KEDS. What's worse is that Claire is trying to flirt with Massie's crush, the AH-dorable Chris Abely. Something must be done! Massie and her friends, Alicia Rivera, Dylan Marvil and Kristen Gregory, come up with several plans to make sure that Claire does not feel at home on Massie's estate. It works. Claire is feeling more alone than ever with only one friend at OCD School. LBR, Layne Abely. Claire gets her revenge by stealing Massie's friends, but it doesn't end so well. Will Claire ever be accepted into the Pretty Committee?
